New Age, Old Troubles: Economic Policy by Evgeny Yasin comprises his celebrated articles of the 2000s. They are devoted to the strategy of reforms in Russian economy and various factors which have an influence on its development (from system of taxation to system of values). These articles complement and explicate each other; taken as a whole, they offer a considered analysis of the key problems in modern Russian economy, as well as a balanced program of measures which would enable Russia to achieve fast and substantial economic growth.
The book includes a cycle of five extensive papers given to the annual international conferences at the State University — High School of Economics in 2000–2004: «Russian Economic Strategy for the First Decade of the New Century» (2000), «Modernization of Russian Economy: Agenda» (2001), «An Outlook for Russian Economy: Problems, and the Factors of Growth» (2002), «Economic Modernization and System of Values» (2003), «Competitiveness and Modernization of Russian Economy: Start of the Project» (2004).
The book also includes two other papers, «The Burden of the State and Economic Policy: The Liberal Alternative» and «Non-Market Sector: Structural Reforms and Economic Growth.» They were written in 2003 and attracted wide public response.
The book is completed by the article «Russia After the Twentieth Century,» in which Evgeny Yasin emphasizes the central idea of all his works: Russia cannot achieve economic health and prosperity but following the way of democratic development.
